For many years, Fernie has been regarded by travelers as somewhat of a hidden gem, an amazing little town that doesn’t receive much attention as a major tourist destination. But don’t expect this gem to stay hidden for much longer. Thanks to the hard working folks at Tourism Fernie, our city is quickly becoming one of BC’s premier year-round travel destinations.

On January 30, the Fernie Stanford Resort was pleased to host the annual Tourism Fernie open house. Major talking points at this year’s meting included summer attractions and media exposure.

Traditionally, Fernie has attracted the majority of its annual tourist traffic during the ski season, but, as TF president Derick Berry explains in an article in the Fernie FP, that’s no longer the case: “Summer events are selling out compared to the winter spike before, with weddings, fly fishing and accommodation.”

Social media and TV are also helping fuel Fernie’s increasing popularity. Award-winning travel blog Touque & Canoe, which profiles unique Canadian travel destinations, has been instrumental in generating online buzz about Fernie, especially among a younger generation with a penchant for outdoor adventure.

This March, TV crews will descend on Fernie for the production of a fly-fishing program to be aired on the World Fishing network, helping generate more buzz about one of Fernie’s top summer activities.

Even as it starts to hit the big time, Fernie hasn’t lost its close-knit community feel. Here at the Stanford Fernie Resort, we are proud to be an active member of this community, helping to encourage the ongoing success and prosperity of our city. For anyone visiting Fernie, look to our full-service resort to provide high-quality accommodations with great value. We would be delighted to be your home base for exploring everything Fernie has to offer!
