Are you an avid trail runner who likes to be at the head of the pack? If so, Fernie BC may be the place for you to be on June 16th. The Lone Wolf is a trail running challenge like no other. This is a ‘last man or woman standing’ kind of race to see who will come out on top.

The race begins on the hour and all racers start off together down the single track loop. Each participant has one hour to complete the loop and then the race starts all over again, but in the opposite direction. Those who don’t complete a loop in the hour are out and are relegated to the den. The course continues to alternate back and forth until only the lone wolf remains.

The approximately 7K track is said to be manageable with moderate elevation gain. Runners will have to be mindful of time limits, but also able to pace themselves so that they can continue on. It’s a challenge of both the body and mind.

Racers have the opportunity to participate solo (lone wolf), as a two person team (coyotes), as a two person team with a combined age of 80 or over (cougars), or as a two person team with a combined age of 32 or under (pups). Prizes will be given out to the top three in each category.

The challenge will run all weekend until only one remains, but if things look like they’re going to run past the weekend, the stakes will be raised—so be prepared. Registration for the race is now open with costs being $75 for solo runners and $150 for teams, except for pup teams which are $60. There are 150 solo spots and 30 spots for each set of teams. Registration closes on June 13th at midnight.
