St. Patrick’s Day is fast approaching. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to spend the holiday in Fernie. From heading to Fernie Brewing Company for their monthly beer launch to enjoying a night of drop-in curling at the Fernie Curling Club, check out the top 3 ways to spend St. Patrick’s Day in Fernie.

Team Trivia Night at Park Place Lodge

Park Place Lodge is hosting a Team Trivia Night this St. Patrick’s Day. Kicking off at 8:00 pm on March 17th, this event is free to attend and there will be dinner specials. Prizes are allotted for the first and second place winners. And if it’s anything like last year’s St. Patrick’s Day trivia night, then there might even be live music and Guinness!

Enjoy a Flight at the Fernie Brewing Company

What better way to spend St. Patrick’s Day then at Fernie’s very own brewery, the Fernie Brewing Company. They are known for their extensive selection of craft beers and even have a few new releases this March. The Headwall Hazy Pale IPA, which pays homage to Fernie’s iconic backdrop, made its debut on March 3rd, while the Timelapse Helles Lager was released on March 10th. They also currently have a promotion going on in support of Ukraine, where all proceeds of their Rambling On Amber Ale will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

Drop-in Curling

One last way to spend St. Patrick’s Day in Fernie is by heading to the Fernie Curling Club for a drop-in session. Thursday night curling is open to anyone and costs just $10 (all equipment included). So grab a team, dress up in your most festive green attire, and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on the rink!

If you’re going to be in Fernie this St. Patrick’s Day, then we suggest getting into the Irish spirit and celebrating with the events above. And if you need a place to stay while in town, we’d love to have you at the Fernie Stanford Resort.

Have you ever tried curling? Now is your chance because Drop-in Curling at the Fernie Memorial Arena is back for 2022!

The Fernie Curling Club takes over Fernie Memorial Arena every Thursday between 7:00 pm and 10:00 pm, offering newcomers the chance to try their hand at Canada’s national pastime for just $10.

Anyone and everyone is invited to attend. No experience or equipment required. The Fernie Curling Club has brooms for all to use. All that they ask is that you bring a clean pair of indoor shoes for the ice, though they do have extra pairs of shoes on hand should you need to borrow a pair.

Drop-in Curling at Fernie Memorial Arena is taking place all winter long, with sessions running from Thursday, February 17th until Thursday, April 14th.

Guests also have the option of renting out the club if they’d like to enjoy a private curling session with them and their friends. The Fernie Curling Club is available for larger groups at $50 for two hours. This includes use of the lounge, bar service, and commercial kitchen, should you wish to hire a caterer.

What are you waiting for? Have some fun, support the local Fernie community, and learn a new sport all at the same time. Drop-in Curling at the Fernie Memorial Arena is just $10 per session.

Overall, if you’re going to be in Fernie in February, March, or April, then we suggest “dropping in’ and spending a Thursday evening with the Fernie Curling Club. And if you need a place to stay while in town, know that you’re always welcome at the Fernie Stanford Resort. We are located only a stone’s throw away from the ski mountain and offer affordable rates, complimentary breakfast, and all kinds of family-friendly amenities, including a games room and a pool with a waterslide.

The Fernie Ghostriders have returned for the 2021-22 season, and we couldn’t be more excited!

For those that don’t know, the Fernie Ghostriders are Fernie’s own KIJHL Junior Hockey Team. They are a Junior B Hockey Team playing in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Ice Hockey League.

The current coach is Jeff Wagner, and the team got their name from the shadow that forms at sunset on Mt Hosmer in Fernie.

The Ghostriders season takes place all fall and winter long, with games scheduled throughout October, November, December, January, and February (the play-off season begins in mid-February).

Games generally take place on Friday and Saturday nights, with a few exceptions. For example, the upcoming schedule includes games on Friday, October 29th, Saturday, October 30th, Friday, November 12th, Saturday, November 20th, and Saturday, November 27th.

Puck drop is at 7:30 pm and entry costs just $11 for adults and $6 for seniors and students.

Attending a Ghostrider game is a popular pastime among locals and tourists alike. Beyond the game itself, there are always concession stands, beverage gardens, merchandise booths, and special events like 50/50 raffles, teddy bear tosses, shootout challenges, and diamond ring prize draw games.

As with all Fernie events, they are subject to provincial health guidelines. COVID-19 safety protocols must be followed at all times.

Tickets can be purchased in advance on the Fernie Ghostriders’ official website. Grab your tickets while you still can!

If you plan on visiting Fernie this fall or winter, then we highly recommend purchasing a ticket to a Fernie Ghostriders game (it’s like a rite of passage here in Fernie). And if you need a place to stay during your visit, we’d love to have you at the Fernie Stanford Resort. Fernie’s Wednesday Socials Outdoor Concert Series is back in 2021!

Having taken place for almost a decade, this outdoor concert series is beloved amongst locals and visitors alike.

This year, this annual Fernie tradition is kicking off on August 4th and lasting until September 1st.

Hosted by The Arts Station, each Wednesday for the month of August Station Square will turn into a giant block party. There will be live music performed by a different local band every week.

Although the 2021 lineup has yet to be announced, you can bet it will be great. Past headliners have included DJ Jay Ray, Big Little Lions, and Hark Raving Sirens. Plus, you can expect to hear all types of music, from indie and folk to reggae and funk.

Each night will begin with a DJ, before transitioning into the main band or artist. Crowds usually start to form around 5:30 pm, with the headliner coming on stage at approximately 6:30 pm.

You can also expect there to be food trucks and other vendors on-site. In past years, local farmers and artisans have set up shop on Wednesday nights, adding yet another attraction to the event.

Wednesday Socials Outdoor Concert Series will take place on August 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, and September 1st from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The concerts are free to attend and there are no tickets necessary. The Arts Station just asks that everyone do their part to limit the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks and maintaining a distance of six feet from others.

If you plan on visiting Fernie this August, then be sure to attend one of only five Wednesday Socials Outdoor Concert Series events happening in 2021. And if you need a place to stay during your visit, we’d love to host you at the Fernie Stanford Resort. We combine a scenic alpine location and family-friendly amenities (including a pool, water slide, and on-site restaurant!) with prices to suit all budgets.

Fernie’s local farmers’ market is back this summer! Kicking off July 4th, the Fernie Mountain Market will be open every Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm until September 5th.

2021 marks the 18th year of the market, which takes place annually in Rotary Park. It provides locals and visitors alike an unparalleled opportunity to meet local growers and purchase all kinds of delicious produce and prepared food.

At the Fernie Mountain Market, you can expect to find fresh, hand-picked fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and even locally-raised meat.

Meanwhile, attendees looking for some breakfast can frequent the bakers’ stalls, featuring everything from croissants and cookies to berry pies and homemade bread.

In recent years, the Fernie Mountain Market has also been home to several food trucks. This makes the market a great place to grab some lunch and have an impromptu picnic in the park. Food truck vendors vary, but in the past, they have included the likes of Flippin Crepes, which serves up fresh crepes on the spot.

You’ll also find local artisans selling all kinds of unique gift items, such as jewellery, soap, and artwork.

In general, you can expect everything for sale at this Fernie farmers’ market to be made, baked, or grown locally in Fernie.

Though the market is only scheduled to go until Labour Day weekend, they already have a special one-day market event planned for September 13th at the Fall Fair in City Hall.

As with all events taking place during the pandemic, patrons are encouraged to wear masks or face coverings, maintain a physical distance of six feet from those outside their household, and sanitize their hands as much as possible (there will be sanitization stations set up throughout the market).

If it’s fresh strawberries, carrots, pie, or a bouquet of flowers you’re after, look no further than the Fernie Mountain Market.

If you plan on visiting Fernie this summer, then be sure to plan a visit to this outdoor Sunday market. And if you need a place to stay during your visit, we’d love to host you at the Fernie Stanford Resort. We combine comfortable accommodation and family-friendly amenities with a scenic alpine location and unbeatable prices.

As the snow starts to melt and the days are longer, it’s the perfect time to enjoy a spring adventure in Fernie. This small town in Southern BC is home to some spectacular scenery and really comes alive in the spring time when flowers start to bloom and the days are warmer.

Below we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite things to do in Fernie this spring.

Enjoy Your Last Ski Day

As the winter season winds down, Fernie Alpine Resort usually closes its downhill ski and snowboard operations in mid-April. Now’s your chance to get out and enjoy some spring slush laps before the snow has all gone.

Try Your Hand at Mountain Biking

Whether it’s your first time trying this sport or you’re a seasoned pro - Fernie has lots of options to try your hand at this popular mountain town sport. From beginner trails to advanced downhill, there are over 100 trails surrounding Fernie. You can rent a variation of different bikes directly from Fernie Alpine Resort and enjoy a fun-filled day in the saddle.

Hike to a Scenic Waterfall

With the warmer weather melting the snow from high up in the mountains, this time of year is ideal for waterfall watching. Fairy Creek Falls is a beginner hike, perfect for all the family. Make sure to check the conditions before you go as spiked shoes are sometimes still required throughout early spring.

If you’re in Fernie this spring time, you’ll want to book a room at the Fernie Stanford Waterslide Resort. In close proximity to all the adventures Fernie has to offer and with all the amenities you could need, you’re sure to enjoy your stay with us.

Fernie, BC is known for one thing in the wintertime: winter sports. Thanks to Fernie Alpine Resort, located on the Lizard Range, we are home to one of the best ski and snowboarding mountains in all of Canada. The city comes alive every December, as soon as Fernie Alpine Resort opens for the season. This year, Winter Opening Day is tentatively scheduled for December 5, so you better mark your calendars!

Fernie Alpine Resort is the epitome of a winter wonderland, especially for avid skiers and snowboarders alike. With over 2,400 acres of fresh powder and 142 different runs of varying difficulties, there is something for everyone. (There is even a Snow School for anyone new to the sport or in need of a refresher.) And for those that don’t know, Fernie Alpine Resort is known for its high annual snowfall, which makes it one of the top spots for powder skiing in all of the Rockies.

Beyond skiing and snowboarding, there are plenty of other reasons to visit Fernie Alpine Resort this winter. Snowshoeing, holiday sleigh rides, winter fat biking, and cross country skiing are all offered here. There are even weekly yoga and stretching classes in Lizard Creek Lodge.

Once open, the resort will remain open daily until April 2021. With everything going on this year, special COVID-19 protocols are in place and must be followed. For example, face masks or coverings are required in lift lines and while riding on the chair lifts, and all rental and retail shops, as well as food and beverage outlets will have limited capacities to ensure social distancing.

Lift tickets, season passes, and Snow School lessons can all be purchased online in advance of your visit. Typically, Fernie Alpine Resort offers deals and discounts the earlier you book, so be sure to check out their website if you know you’ll be visiting this winter.

If you plan on hitting the slopes this winter, then you’ll want to book a room at the Fernie Stanford Resort. We combine quality accommodation and top-notch amenities with a picturesque alpine location and unbeatable prices.

It’s that time of year, which means Fernie is about to get spooky! This alpine town comes alive in the fall, in part thanks to Halloween. Despite the global pandemic, Fernie still has several COVID-friendly Halloween events taking place in 2020. From the town’s annual Halloween run to a special event at the local library, check out the top three ways to celebrate Halloween 2020 in Fernie, BC.

4th Annual Dash in the Dark

2020 marks the fourth year of Dash in the Dark, Fernie’s very own Halloween run. Hosted by the Fernie Nordic Society at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre, this fun tradition will see all participants dressed to the nines in their Halloween costumes, walking or running along a set track in the dark. While it sounds spooky, it promises to be fun for the whole family. Headlamps are encouraged and the run starts at 6:00 pm sharp on October 29. There will be complimentary post-run beers for the adults at Stag Leap HQ after the event.

Halloween at Fernie Heritage Library

The Fernie Heritage Library is celebrating Halloween a little differently this year. There will be two events taking place on October 30. The first is a virtual storytime at 11:15 am, live streamed on the library’s Facebook and Instagram pages. A special Halloween-themed book will be chosen. The second part of the library’s Halloween celebration is an outdoor trick or treat event taking place in the garden. From 3:30 pm until 5:00 pm, library staff will be outdoors handing out candy to trick or treaters of all ages.

Fall Paint Night at The Arts Station

Finally, celebrate Halloween in Fernie by attending a fall paint night at The Arts Station. Artist Sue Hanlon will be on hand to guide you through a two-hour painting session on the evening of October 16. Tickets are $45 a piece and they include all materials and two hours of instruction. Anyone ages 12 and up is welcome to attend, and please remember to bring your face mask as they are mandatory.

If you plan on visiting Fernie in the Halloween season, then you’ll want to book a room at the Fernie Stanford Resort. We combine quality accommodation and top-notch amenities with a picturesque alpine location.

If you’re wondering what to do in Fernie during the fall, we’ve got you covered. Hiking

Visiting Fernie means direct access to the Canadian Rockies, which makes this a great place to go hiking. There are hiking trails to suit all levels in Fernie. From short, easy day hikes to multi-day backpacking treks, there are plenty of ways to get out in nature. Plus, fall is one of the best times to go hiking. During this time of year, you can expect milder weather coupled with stunning, brightly-coloured foliage. Fairy Creek Falls is a picturesque yet short hike for families. For longer hikes, be sure to visit Mt Fernie Provincial Park.

Golfing

Golfing season isn’t over yet! The Fernie Golf Club stays open until at least Canadian Thanksgiving. That gives you several more weeks to hit the links. If you’re short on time, the Fernie Golf Club has an express 1-hour loop option available to golfers. Nestled among the Rocky Mountains, Fernie is the perfect place to play your last golf game of the year.

Heritage Walking Tour

Fernie, BC dates back to 1904, and believe it or not, not much has changed since then. The downtown core has largely been preserved, which makes it a fascinating site for history buffs. Fernie, BC is a natural paradise, which makes it the perfect spot to go hiking. Mount Fernie Provincial Park is just around the corner, not to mention the plethora of gorgeous mountains to explore in the area (Mt Bisaro, Mt Hosmer, Mt Proctor, Three Sisters, and the Lizard Range, to name a few). Whether you’re in the mood for a short, easy hike or something a little more challenging, keep reading to discover the best hikes in Fernie, British Columbia.

Heiko’s Trail

Heiko’s Trail is definitely the most epic hike in Fernie. Visitors from all over come to hike this 21 kilometre trail that takes you through canyons, mountain meadows, waterfalls, and even the huge Bisaro Cave. If you choose to do this trek, prepare for a long, full day of hiking (about 8-12 hours), but rest assured, the views (and possible wildlife sightings) will be worth it!

Fairy Creek Falls

Are you planning a family hike? We can’t think of anywhere better than Fairy Creek Falls. This trail has hikers following Fairy Creek all the way to a scenic waterfall that sits at the base of Mount Proctor. The waterfall itself promises to be loud, misty and overflowing with water (especially in mid to late spring), which makes it the perfect place to cool off.

Three Sisters

The Three Sisters Trail will have hikers climbing to the peak of the tallest mountain visible from Fernie, Mount Trinity. This hike is not for the faint-hearted! The trail begins the same way as Heiko’s Trail, taking you through caves, canyons, and meadows. However, it diverges shortly thereafter, when you start to head up Three Sisters. Note: Be sure to do this hike on a clear day, as otherwise, the clouds will block the incredible view you get from the top.

If you plan on hiking while in the beautiful alpine town of Fernie, then you’ll want to book a room at the Fernie Stanford Resort. A short distance from some of the best trails in the area, we combine cozy accommodation and family-friendly amenities with an unbeatable location.

Broaden Your Creative Repertoire

The group first meets to discuss the artist that has been selected for the week. Attendees can expect to learn about the style of the artist in question and then move on to try their hand at painting in the same style. It should be noted that, while there is no fee to attend the class, supplies are not included; each participant must bring their own.

Everyone Welcome

Every Thursday from 1 pm to 3 pm, Jackie will teach an art history lesson on the deck of The Fernie Arts Station. The next artist to be featured is Claude Monet on July 30. Past featured artists include Keith Haring, Lawren Harris, Edward Hopper, and Salvador Dali. Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary. Come out and take part in some lively discussion and creative pursuits. Putting your own spin on the classics is highly encouraged.

Fernie is renowned for its skiing, but there is much more to see and do here than just hit the slopes. The area is filled with spectacular scenery and now is the perfect time to get out and enjoy it. Fairy Creek Falls is one of those magnificent places that you’ll want to visit again and again.

Not to worry if you’re not an experienced hiker. The trails to the falls are quite easy. That said, a lot of people enjoy this hike in the winter, when the falls are frozen. While the frozen water is spectacular, when the trails are covered in snow they are more challenging to navigate. Also, it’s important to note that when the falls are frozen, hikers should never venture to the base, as this puts them right in an avalanche zone from up on Mt. Proctor. While this isn’t a good trail to take a stroller on, kids usually do well hiking this easy path.

The trek in and back out is 4km overall and is an elevation gain of 120m. As the name suggests, the trail follows along Fairy Creek on the lower part of Mount Proctor and leads hikers to the falls. More experienced hikers might be interested to know that the trail connects to Fairy Creek Trails that heads up the mountain, and further, to the base of the Three Sisters/Mt. Trinity.

After a day of activity, you’ll need somewhere to rest your head. If you’re in need of accommodation in Fernie, there’s no better choice than the Fernie Stanford Resort. With a variety of spacious rooms, suites and condos to choose from, you’re sure to find a space that meets your needs. The hotel also offers an award-winning restaurant, aquatic centre with waterslide, complimentary continental breakfast, ultra-friendly staff, and so much more.

Avid skiers may not feel celebratory about the snowy season coming to an end, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had. On April 11 and 12 the Fernie Alpine resort hosts its annual closing weekend celebration, dubbed ‘Fernival’, and it’s always a spectacular way to wrap things up.

Lifts will be open from 9 am until 4 pm both days for skiing and snowboarding action. At 11 am the always raucous Raging Elk Powder Pedal Paddle Relay Race is set to take place. This is an over 30-year tradition and one not to be missed. Teams are made up of 2 to 5 people and it’s a competition like no other. Teams do their best to bike, ski, paddle or run their way down the hill in this lighthearted relay race.

Those who want to take a break from the hill can join the Party in the Plaza, which happens from 12 pm until 6 pm. The Kokanee Event Gardens will be running for the entire party. The opening bands hit the stage at 2 pm and Delhi to Dublin plays at 3:30 pm. At 5 pm the winners from the Power Pedal Paddle Race will be honoured.

On Sunday at 1 pm attendees can take in the Slush Cup Slope Soaker. Participants try to make it across the pond on skis or snowboards, often with hilarious and less than impressive results. This event also features a wide range of creative costumes. Points are awarded not only for crossing the pond, but also for such distinctions as creating the biggest splash, best crowd reaction, and best costume. At 3 pm, there will be more great music when The Hip Flexors hit the stage.

Fernival is always an amazing time with tons to see and do. If you need accommodation in Fernie for this or any other event, be sure to check out the options at the Fernie Stanford Resort. With incredible views, convenient amenities and spacious rooms, suites and private condos to choose from, there’s something here to suit everyone.

If snowboarding is your passion, Fernie, BC is where you should be on March 28 and 29. That’s when the Dirty Dancer Banked Slalom is taking place this year and it’s set to be as epic as always.

The event celebrates snowboarding culture and everything shredders have had to overcome to become revered titans of the hill. There was a time not so long ago when snowboarders were unwelcome ski hill guests. Dirty Dancer Banked Slalom honours the hard-won victory.

This event has been in place for several years and has become so popular that it was extended from a one-day to a two-day event. The slalom course runs through Dancer Gully in Lizard Bowl. All ages are welcome, but it is recommended that boarders be of intermediate skill level or higher to take part.

The categories for the event are Open Grom (under 14 years men and women), Open Youth (ages 15-18 men and women), Open Adult (men and women), Pro (men and women), and Pro Masters (40+).

The open categories are for intermediate riders who are still building their skills. Pro categories are for experienced riders who want to assert their clout. There are no official regulations for which category riders should place themselves in, but the hope is that registrants will honestly assess their skill level and register for the appropriate category group they belong in.

There will be many prizes up for grabs for the top placers and also some amazing draw prizes. There must be at least four riders in a category for the race to proceed. Also, if a category has too many registrants, the category may be split up into groups. Registration for the event is now open and typically fills up fast.

If you’re visiting Fernie for this adrenalin-filled event or you are looking forward to seeing local attractions such as Fairy Creek Falls or the Fernie Heritage Library, you'll be looking for wonderfully comfortable accommodations in Fernie. The Fernie Stanford Resort is an outstanding choice with impressive hotel features such as well-appointed rooms, suites, and condos, an indoor pool, giant waterslide, free high-speed internet, and 24-hour front desk and much more.
