Wednesdays: Griz Kids Craft Kids – kids will love this free arts and crafts evening at the Slopeside Coffee Shop. Children aged 6-12 (younger if accompanied by an adult) can create their own souvenirs of their trip to Fernie, and have a fun and educational experience at the same time.

Fridays: Movie Mania Family Movie Nights: Sit back at the Slopeside Coffee Shop Friday evenings with a bag of popcorn and enjoy a free family movie. 6-8pm

Saturdays (until March 31, 2012): Kids Activity Nights - Come by the Slopeside Coffee Shop on Saturday evenings for a different themed activity each week! Depending on the week there are games, fun activities, science and more! For children ages 6-12 (younger if accompanied by an adult). 6:30pm – 8:00pm.

Preview Weekend at our Fernie Stanford Resort

This coming weekend, Nov. 26^th-27^th, Fernie Alpine Resort will be open for a preview weekend. Come get a taste for what the 2011-12 winter ski season has in store! With the Elk, Bear, and Mighty Moose lifts operating, there will be plenty of terrain to ski or ride this weekend. Many mountain services, including food and beverage operations, retail, rentals/lessons, and kids daycare will be available as well.

With over 38cm of snowfall in the last 24 hours, and 90cm of new snow in the last 7 days it’s sure to be a great start for this ski season.

If you can’t make it for Preview weekend this weekend, don’t fret! Fernie Alpine Resort officially opens on Friday December 2, 2011. Be sure to check out our winter Fernie Resort packages for great deals this winter.

HOLLYWOOD CREATES WINTER IN FERNIE’S “OFF SEASON”

Mountain bikers who have enjoyed their time on the trails around Fernie may not be pleased with the approaching colder weather that will mark an end to the season. They may even have been experiencing the doldrums which occur when conditions are not quite ready for them to leave the previous season, but are too early to embark on the next season of skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, dog sledding in their Fernie winter wonderland.

There is no “off season” for Fernie weather, particularly its winter weather. Case in point: Have you noticed how Fernie is being transformed on Second Avenue, Fernie Museum, Fernie Courthouse, City Hall, and Coal Creek barn, into the snowy locations of a new family Christmas movie, Disney’s Santa Pups? What biker or snow bunny would not enjoy Merry Christmas banners strung across the street, candy canes in October, fluffy white puppies or fake, machine-made snow? (film crews consider the disadvantages of having too much snow when they’re trying to film) They may even enjoy donning ski jackets to act as extras, joining local fellow skaters acting as extras in the new ice rink being built outside Coal Creek barn. If they don’t get into the film, they still might like to watch for well-known cast members such as Charlie’s Angel actress, Cheryl Ladd (Mrs. Claus) or Seinfeld actor Danny Woodburn (Santa’s head elf).

Winter was recently recreated in Fernie In 2009. Fernie locals donned their own retro ski jackets to appear alongside star, John Cusac, in the movie, Hot Tub Time Machine, filmed at the Fernie Alpine Resort, aka Kodiak Valley ski resort. The now-famous hot tub from the movie, which was used to transport four men to the 1980s, can be rented at the Timber Chalet.

Last November, huge avalanches were created and filmed around Fernie for the epic thriller, Inception, that starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Ken Watanabe. Now what frustrated mountain biker would not trade his or her “off season” for a chance meeting with one of the stars or crew in Fernie’s restaurants or hotels?

So, don’t fret, Fernie-ites, for winter is never far away. Release of the Fernie-made movies will soon be at a theatre near you or on DVD, allowing you to enjoy views of your local terrain over and over. Or, during this “off season”, count the few days left before opening day (first week in December, weather permitting) of the resort’s 50th year, and a chance to shoosh down the most ski runs (140) in the Rockies, on the most snow in the Rockies, enjoying the most vertical in the Rockies, making laps on the only new lift in the BC Rockies-- the Polar Peak Lift.

I missed the Music Festival, but this almost made up for it. I got this picture at a quiet moment, between river-rafters and anglers passing by. Thanks again.

Wapiti Music Festival in Fernie!

Check out some of the biggest acts in the Canadian indie scene this Friday and Saturday, August 19^th and 20^th, at Fernie’s Annex park. Elliott Brood, Said the Whale, Library Voices, and dozens of other acts from Fernie and across Canada will take the stage in what promises to be one of the most exciting outdoor festivals this summer.

Lots to See and Do in Fernie as Summer Approaches

It’s not quite Summer yet, but if you find yourself in Fernie during the next few weeks, you’ll find plenty of places where the entertainment is hotter than high noon in July.

Spring Has Sprung in Fernie!

Ski season may be over, but springtime in Fernie offers up so much to see and do that you’ll be forgetting about the slopes in no time.

The month of May is where it all begins, and it starts this weekend with the annual Relay for Life fundraiser on Friday, May 6 at 7:30 at the Vogue Theatre. Trooper Set to Headline This Weekend’s Fernival

3rd Annual Reel Canadian Film Fest Is Right Around the Corner

If you're in town this weekend, March 25-27, you'll have the one of a kind opportunity to celebrate some of Canada's best filmmaking at The 3^rd annual Reel Canadian Film Festival. Featuring everything from local short films, to exclusive screenings of some high profile features like Fubar II, this year's festival promises to be one of the best. You'll also get a chance to meet and mingle with local filmmakers and to get an inside look at how independent cinema is produced in Canada.

Fernie Griz Days are Back, Bigger and Better than Ever

The 34^th annual Fernie Griz Days are right around the corner, taking place this weeknd, March 4-6. For out-of-towners, here’s the scoop: every year in early March (since 1978), Fernie locals gather to celebrate winter. Legend has it that The Griz, a mysterious mountain man living high in the Fernie hills, emerges each winter to shoot his musket into the sky to shake the clouds and send snow pouring down over the city. And with some of the fluffiest, most gorgeous powder around, Fernie has plenty to thank the old guy for. So during the festival, you’ll see lots of folks donning Griz costumes. You’ll also experience the best that Fernie culture has to offer including live music, après ski parties, and the famous Raging Elk Dummy Downhill race. There’s also plenty to satisfy the competitor in you, with a pancake eating contest, street hockey tournament and arm-wrestling championship.

Fernie Arts Scene Heats Up

If the Snow Drags aren’t enough, this coming weekend is jam packed with events showcasing Fernie’s vibrant performing arts community.

It starts on Friday night, Feb. 18, at the Fernie Arts Station with the 3^rd Annual WeeFest, a single night multi-genre performing arts festival with everything from poetry to painting, featuring local talent from a town truly passionate about the arts. The show starts at 8:00pm and tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for youth under 18. The Fernie Arts Station is at 601 1st Avenue. Visit their website for more info.

On Saturday, Feb. 19, the Fernie Spirit Festival takes place at the Arts Station, where you can enjoy family snow games before settling in at 4:00pm for street performances by the St. Mary’s Band and the Fernie Youth Theatre Association. Admission is free.

Cap off your arty weekend on Sunday night, Feb. 20, at the Central Pub with Fernie Wordfest, where storytellers, sonneteers, songwriters and thespians all take to the stage to showcase their talent at manipulating these things we call words. Admission is free and the event features all local performers. There’s an open mic between sets too, when any brave aspiring wordsmith will have an opportunity to upstage the pros. The first set starts at 9:00pm and the second at 10:00pm. Get there early and enjoy a pint while securing prime seats. The Central Pub is at 206 3rd Street.

Snow Drag Races Return to Fernie, BC

The return of the famous Fernie Snow Drags happens on Saturday, February 19, 2011. The competition features a multitude of snowmobile drag racing events in a number of categories, catering to all types of snowmobilers and riders. Get geared up to power down the slopes for a shot at one of the many prizes, including a $2000 first prize.

After last year’s event was cancelled because of weather conditions, anticipation is high for this year’s races. And word from the Fernie Snowmobile Association is that this year’s track is shaping up to be one of the best ever, so don’t miss it.

I really enjoyed the Fernie Museum exhibit on bicycles and permanent exhibits last month, and ongoing. Looking forward to the Delyea & Delyea exhibits, and hoping the weather is good so I can walk over from the Hotel again.

10th Annual Fernie Half Marathon

Although outdoor enthusiasts in Fernie are always looking forward to the beginning of winter and the ski season, fall offers plenty of opportunities to get outdoors, and one of the most celebrated is the annual Fernie Half Marathon. This year, the 10^th annual run has a picturesque course laid out along the Elk River with a stunning mountain backdrop to inspire the runners.

This year there are some exciting additions to the race weekend. The introduction of chip timing technology brings the Fernie Half Marathon up to speed with other premier races, and allows the race to ensure that with the increasing number of competitors, everyone will still get an accurate time. In addition, there will be a Runner’s Expo held the day before the race featuring a gourmet luncheon, fitness and wellness experts, and Race Pre-Registration and Package Pick-Up.

Fernie Ghostriders Season Opener

Today, Friday September 10, marks the start of the Fernie Ghostriders’ 2010/2011 season. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm against the Kamloops Storm, and it’s sure to be a spirited affair.

This year’s edition of the Ghostriders is stocked with local junior hockey talent. The KIJHL is a fast-paced, high calibre amateur league that has sent its share of players to Junior A and even the NHL. Notable alumni include Adam Deadmarsh, Ray Ferraro, Barret Jackman, Steve Tambelini, and Shea Weber. Don’t miss your chance to see the potential stars of tomorrow today, for a fraction of the cost of seeing a live NHL game.

Later in the season, the Ghostriders are pleased to announce they have been selected as the hosts for the 2011 KIJHL All Star Game! Come out and celebrate the best talent in the league in what will definitely be one of the highlights of the season. Stay tuned for further information.

Fernie TransRockies Wrap Up

The 9^th TransRockies mountain bike race was a big success this year, and Fernie, BC is proud to have played a major role in it. Just ask the organisers

“The TransRockies was a great success thanks to your support.

Retailers in the downtown reported their two busiest days of the year and the energy in town was amazing.

The time trial held people in the downtown all day, the Kids Bike Rally was a success and the riders loved the trails. Stage 2 start saw the Studabaker lead the riders through the downtown on a beautiful sunny morning. Fernie was well represented with many placing near the top of their category.

The TransRockies owners have already committed to Fernie for the 10th anniversary year!”

Also a big thank you to everyone who came out and cheered at the Fernie stages, showcasing the passion this town has for the sport. Full Throttle Mountain Bike Festival

The third annual Full Throttle Mountain Bike Festival rolls into Fernie next weekend bringing with it a full slate of races, demonstrations, and free live music performances. Race highlights include the Super D Enduro race, the Dirt Crit race, Kids Crit race, and the Dual Slalom race, and there are great prizes available to be won. Events are open to any mountain biking enthusiast who wishes to participate (contact Guest Services at 250-423-4655). Throughout the weekend there will also be some impressive demonstrations of skill at the Bike Trials Demo, where athletes will show off their balance and agility over an obstacle course of epic proportions.

Even those who aren’t mountain bike fans will find things to entertain themselves with, as both Saturday and Sunday night feature free live shows by the Surf Dragons and DJ Maccabi respectively. During the day, guests can take a scenic chairlift ride to the top of the mountain and enjoy the spectacular views from the Lost Boys Café, or enjoy the summer sunshine in the outdoor Kokanee beer garden.

The world-famous TransRockies mountain bike race is going back to where it all started 9 years ago. Just like the original course, this year’s race runs from Fernie to Canmore, Alberta over a new and improved 400km course. To celebrate its 9^th straight year of involvement with the race, Fernie is pulling out all the stops for a memorable kick-off weekend. Everything gets started on Saturday with registration. The public can enjoy a historical bike show and beer garden on Victoria Avenue in the afternoon, while some of Fernie’s top restaurants will be hosting a dine-around event with meals specially prepared to fuel the riders.

Saturday kicks off the tour with a public breakfast at CP Station Square and the opening leg – a time trial that starts and finishes on Victoria Avenue. CP Station Square continues to host a beverage and food garden during the day for the public to enjoy, while the popular Kids Bike Rally takes place. The day ends with a banquet and daily awards ceremony at the Fernie Community Centre. On Monday, Fernie bids farewell to the riders as Stage 2 begins on Victoria Avenue and the competitors head off towards Canmore.

Fernie Alpine Resort is proud to host the Thursday Night Mountain Bike Race Series. Come out and enjoy an evening of fun, gravity-fed mountain biking, and great post-race refreshments and prizes at Kelsey’s Restaurant! Only 5 bucks per race (includes post-race beverage at Kelsey’s!). Register by 6:30 pm on race day.

Lost Boys Lungbuster MTB Hill Climb – Saturday July 10^th

The ultimate challenge for hard core climbers! This gruelling race starts at the base area and climbs to the top of the Timber Express Chairlift – 2100 vertical feet! Race starts at 9:30 am sharp from the resort base area.

Fernie Brewing Company New Bottles!

After a less-than-ideal Spring, Summer is finally setting in, and at the Fernie Stanford Resort we’re excited to kick back with a beverage from one of our favourite breweries, the Fernie Brewing Company. Locals already know and love each of the five distinct varieties available on taps around BC and Alberta, but until now at the liquor store you could only find The Rocky Mountain Genuine Lager, The Griz Pale Ale, and First Trax Brown Ale . Not any more, as the Fernie Brewing Company has just announced that its two newest products, the What the Huck - Huckleberry Wheat, and Ol’ Willy Wit – Belgian White Ale have hit the shelves along with the classic three in their striking new 650ml bottles throughout BC Liquor Stores and in Alberta.

From the Figure to the Visage

Local artist Liza Gareau-Tosh has spent the past six winters in Fernie and the past lifetime making art. Liza has a keen interest in people and a watchful eye for how people can be works of art. This is the essence of her show at the Arts Station. From the Figure to the Visage is a departure from her usual colourful abstracts that have been seen in Fernie over the years, as Liza returns to her roots as an artist with portraiture and sketching. Come find out why she got into art in the first place. The show combines portraiture, figure drawings, acrylic paintings, and lithographs.

The Olympic Torch will be passing through Fernie as part of the cross-country torch relay this Saturday, January 23. Kick the celebration off by gathering at 7:30 before fireworks and the arrival of the torch at 8:00 am on the corner of 13^th St. & Highway #3. From here, the torch relay will proceed to the steps of City Hall. After a message from the mayor and speeches by Olympic athletes Emily Brydon and Scott Niedermayer the torch will set off for Cranbrook while guests are invited to a Community Breakfast at the Senior’s Drop-In Centre.

The five current band members combine their considerable individual musical talents to create melodies and harmonies that are both Canadian and universal.

Having produced 6 studio albums, a live CD and DVD, performed at the Vimy Memorial dedication in France, and had one of their albums carried into space by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield, Tanglefoot is now embarking on their Farewell Tour, and will be performing one of their final shows ever in Fernie. Join the City of Fernie, BC while they host the 2009 Ninth Western Regional Mine Rescue Competition at Max Turyk School. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the Elk River and promote awareness and safety in the mining industry.

The annual event brings over 600 people to Fernie with 18 teams from North America participating in the Underground and Surface Competitions. The contests are a great way to showcase and celebrate the hard work and dedication of all those involved in mine rescue and emergency response.

Fernie Mountain Bike Festival 2009

Start packing for the 4^th annual Full Throttle Mountain Bike Festival at Fernie Alpine Resort. Scheduled to take place Saturday August 22^nd and Sunday August 23^rd, it is expected to be one of the best weekends of the summer!

The Festival attracts competitors and spectators from various regions who join in celebration of ‘everything mountain bike’. From elite competitors to recreational riders, there is always something for everyone.

Events include highly skilled competitions such as the ‘Super D Downhill’ to more leisurely contests including the ‘Summer Adventure Photo Contest’.

The Fernie National Fly Fishing Championship will involve five competitions held over a period of three days, on two rivers that possess healthy populations of Cutthroat and Bull trout as well as Rocky Mountain Whitefish. An additional lake venue with Cutthroat, Rainbow and Brook trout will also be a part of the competition. All events are ‘catch and release’. Exciting news: We have just received the preliminary schedule for the 2009 National Fly Fishing Championship to be held in Fernie!!

The Event will take place from September 21^st – 26^th, 2009. We welcome spectators, volunteers and participants to register today and book their stay at the Stanford Resort.

Powder Pedal & Paddle Relay Race

Fernie Fishing in Ski Season??…Wow!

The sun is bright and there is blue sky for miles today in Fernie BC. Everyone here appears to be outdoors experiencing this gorgeous spring weather. With the mild temperatures over the past few days, the ice on the Elk River has opened up to reveal the fast flowing fresh water.

As I sit in the relaxed atmosphere of the Stanford Fernie Resort restaurant, I glance out the windows and notice 3 fishermen standing on the banks of the Elk River enjoying an early season fishing fiesta. I watch them, excited to see their reactions, and for the past 10 minutes they have landed almost 40 fighting hungry fish! Talk about a great start to the Fernie Fishing season - I can’t wait until it’s in full swing (which reminds me that golf season is here too!).

At the same time, the bank of the river is lined with skiers returning from this perfect spring ski day. Together, we share this moment as we watch the seasons blend together right before our eyes – what a beautiful sight.

It’s going to be a great Griz Days Weekend

If you aren’t in Fernie yet, start driving now! This morning’s snow report is fantastic news!! Fernie’s upper mountain has received over 18cm of fresh powder in the last 24 hrs! With a nice thick base & 64 runs groomed overnight (110 total!) we are in for an epic weekend of skiing. The temperatures in Fernie are comfortable and the weather should be good for Griz Days. Fernie Griz Days 2009 – Celebration of Snow

Fernie’s Griz Days are back and all of Fernie is pumped for the 32^nd annual winter festival. For those arriving from out of town, this year will kick off on Friday March 6^th at 6:30pm with the highly anticipated Griz Days Parade - so arrive early to catch the excitement. The entire weekend will be filled with numerous events including a craft fair, family carnival, pig roast, pool party and the always entertaining Extreme Griz Days Competitions.

I would like to send a heart felt thank you from our family to the staff at the Fernie Stanford Resort.

Last week we were headed on a family vacation to BC from Calgary and had a planned to stay at our favourite resort, "The Stanford". We like the location, atmosphere, and our young boys particularly love the waterslide! We woke up on the Sunday morning to head out of town bright and early to discover our truck would not start. We were not able to get the truck fixed until the next day and would have to stay another day. The staff very graciously assisted us with rebooking the room, and helping us order food, etc at no additional charge. We were very surprised and grateful of this unexpected support and would really like to express our gratitude for the Stanford's outstanding customer service.

Stanford Fernie Ski Season Launch Party!

As the snowflakes fall and enthusiastic skiers gather from across the country, the Stanford Resort welcomes another exciting ski season in Fernie, BC!

What a wonderful evening! On Thurs Dec 4^th, the Fernie Stanford Resort hosted our annual Ski Season Kick-Off Party in our new restaurant - the Mountain Tandoor. With every seat in the house taken, the restaurant was bustling with our friends from the local Fernie business and hospitality communities. Guests enjoyed authentic East Indian cuisine including tandoor chicken, lamb curry, butter chicken and fresh naan bread. All those in attendance also celebrated with our wide selection of wines, Christmas spirits and traditional desserts.

The Stanford Resort Fernie Hotel sends many thanks to everyone including the tour operators, accommodators, real estate agents, Tourism Fernie members and our friends from the Fernie Brewing Company who all helped make this year’s event another huge success!

Great Things Brewing at the Stanford Fernie Resort

The Rocky Mountain town of Fernie BC has always been famous for its impressive skiing (and we’d also like to think the great accommodations at the Stanford Resort!). Now, thanks to the Fernie Brewing Company, the town is also famous for its great tasting beer! At this year’s 6th Annual Canadian Brewing Competition in Toronto ON, the local brewing company won 2 medals.
