Do you see the beauty in everything? Do you often wish you could make over mundane items in your day to day life? If so, Fernie’s art initiative, Out of the Box, is the event for you. Facilitated by the Fernie & District Arts Council and a group of dedicated volunteers, the project aims to bring beauty to the commonplace.

So, what exactly is Out of the Box? It’s an interactive painting event where local artists work to transform dumpsters into works of art. Applications to be one of the artists involved in the project were submitted by the end of April. Now the chosen artists are getting set to beautify some unlikely canvases.

This year the event is happening on June 28-30 from 4pm to 9pm. On Thursday night and Friday night the artists prime and paint the dumpsters. Pop up DJS will be on hand to build the excitement. Then, on Sat the party really gets going. There will be beer gardens, more DJs, kids areas and an opportunity for everyone to try their hand at painting a community dumpster.

Attendees can vote for their favourite dumpster. The artist who wins ‘people’s choice’ gets a $500 award. The idea behind the project is to beautify the community and to encourage creative endeavours and thinking outside the box, so to speak. The completed dumpsters are relocated around Fernie to further the arts culture of the community and as a reminder to keep an open mind in all that we do.

If you’re planning on getting involved in the action and are looking for a great hotel in the Fernie area, be sure to check out the Fernie Stanford Resort. After the excitement of the event, you can unwind in one of our spacious rooms, enjoy the serene alpine backdrop, or kick back in the hot tub and sauna.
